Bray-sur-Seine

Bray mit seinen 23 Gemeinden liegt in der Region Île­de-France ca. 100 km südöstlich von Paris an der Schnittstelle mit der Champagne und Burgund und, wie der Name schon sagt, an der Seine.

Die Landwirtschaft mit weitläufigen Feldern, aber auch Wälder und Seen bestimmen die Landschaft um Bray-sur-Seine. Die Stadt mit ihren 2.300 Einwohnern wird durch landwirtschaftliche Industrie, den Hafen ­ der östlichste des Pariser Hafenverbundes – und die Freizeitanlagen an der Seine geprägt.

Eine in jedem Jahr stattfindende Messe trägt wie viele andere kommunale Ereignisse zur Attraktivität des ganzen Kantons Bray bei.
Der historische Stadtkern wird teilweise von einer gut erhaltenen Stadtmauer umgeben, um die eine mit Ulmenreihen bestandene Ringstraße führt. Die mittelalterliche Vergangenheit von Bray ist überall sichtbar beim Spaziergang durch seine alten Straßen. Die Spuren sind zahlreich: Statuen von Saint-Nicolas und Saint-Antoine sowie Dachfenster, die aus den Tuilerien von Paris stammen, sind unter anderem zu sehen.

Die Stiftskirche Notre-Dame schmückt eine Vielfalt von Architekturstilen mit einer Überlagerung der Epochen. Sie hat ein bemerkenswertes Dach in Form eines Bootes und gehört zu den Kulturgütern, die man nicht verpassen sollte.
Entlang der Straßen des Zentrums stehen mittelalterliche Häuser. Eines dieser Gebäude wird der französischen Nationalheldin Jeanne d‘ Arc zugeordnet.

Ein schönes Rathaus, eine große, aufwendig renovierte offene Markthalle, ein College und ein großer Campingplatz mit Tennis-, Sportplätzen und einem Schwimmbad machen die Stadt für Besucher anziehend. Die Seine mit ihren Anlagen und Schleusen, mit ihren natürlichen Ufern und die Umgebung mit den vielen kleinen Dörfern unterstreichen den landwirtschaftlichen Charakter der Stadt und des Kantons Bray-sur-Seine.

Diese Umgebung wird auch dadurch einbezogen, dass die Begrüßung der Hemsbacher Partner immer in einer anderen Gemeinde stattfindet. So lernt man bei den Besuchen über die Jahre hinweg den ganzen Kanton kennen.

Nachbarstädte an der Seine sind stromaufwärts Nogent-sur-Seine mit der Kirche Saint-Laurent aus dem 15.-17. Jahrhundert, dem Camille-Claudel-Museum und dem Kernkraftwerk Nogent. Stromabwärts liegt Montereau mit Verbindung zu den schönen Wäldern und Schlössern von Fontainebleau und weiter nördlich dem Schloss Vaux­le-Vicomte, das als Anregung und Vorbild für die Errichtung von Versailles gedient haben soll.

Etwa 20 km nördlich von Bray-sur-Seine liegt das historische Provins, ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe mit Stadtmauer, Burgund Altstadt, südlich Sens mit seiner Kathedrale und dem Bischofspalast.

So ist unsere Partnerstadt, am Rande der Île-de-France und inmitten der Kornkammer von Frankreich gelegen, neben den partnerschaftlichen Kontakten auch ein lohnendes touristisches Ziel.

Bray et son canton de 23 communes se trouve dans la région Ile-de-France à une centaine de kilomètres au sud-est de Paris. Placé à la jonction de la Champagne et de la Bourgogne, le canton est situé sur les deux rives de la Seine.

Le paysage autour de Bray est un paysage agraire avec des champs à perte de vue, des forêts et des lacs. La ville de 2.300 habitants est définie par une industrie rurale, un port (le plus à l’est des ports parisiens) et de nombreuses espaces de loisirs qui s’étendent le long de la Seine.

Chaque année, la grande foire-exposition ainsi que d’autres manifestations attirent de nombreux visiteurs.

Le centre historique Bray est entouré en partie par une fortification bien conservée le long de laquelle passe une route bordée d’ormes. En se promenant dans les rues de la ville on retrouve sans mal les traces de son passé médiéval: au coin d’une rue des statues, une de Saint-Nicolas, une autre de Saint-Antoine., des chiens assis garnis de tuiles provenant des Tuileries de Paris sur les toits de maisons à pans de bois.

La collégiale Notre-Dame réunit plusieurs styles architecturaux. Son vaisseau central est couvert d’un berceau brisé en bois qui date du XVe siècle. L’édifice est classé monument historique et mérite une visite.

Tout le long des rues s’élèvent des demeures médiévales, l’une d’elle est connue sous le nom de Maison de Jeanne d’Arc.

La belle mairie, remarquablement rénovée, trône sur une jolie placette bien fleurie. et pas très loin se trouve la halle du marché.. Bray possède aussi son collège, un grand terrain de camping aménagé, des terrains de sport, des courts de tennis et une piscine. La Seine, avec ses écluses et ses installations marinières, serpente entre des rives naturelles peuplées de petits villages de caractère. Tout ceci met en lumière l’habitat rural de lia ville de Bray et de son canton.
Quand vient le temps des retrouvailles entre nos communes, l’accueil s’
effectue chaque fois dans un autre village ce qui permet aux visiteurs de bien connaître le canton et ses habitants.
La ville voisine en amont du fleuve est Nogent-sur-Seine connue pour son église Saint-Laurent (XVe – XVIIe siècle), la centrale nucléaire et son musée Camille Claudel. En aval du fleuve s’étend la commune de Monterau-Fault-Yonne qui jouxte les les belles forêts du château de Fontainebleau. et plus au nord le château de Vaux-le-Vicomte ayant servi de modèle au château de Versailles.
A une vingtaine de kilomètres au nord de Bray s’élève la cité médiévale de Provins, site classé patrimoine mondiale par l’UNESCO. avec ses remparts bien conservés. Au sud, à distance égale, la cité bourguignonne de Sens avec sa cathédrale et son palais épiscopal.

The canton Bray-sur-Seine is a French administrative unity in the Arrondissement Provins in the Departement Seine-et-Marne.

Bray, with its 23 communities, is situated in the region Ile-de-France approx. 100 km south-east of Paris, where Champagne and Burgundy join and, as the name implies, lies on the banks of the River Seine.

The countryside around Bray-sur-Seine is mainly farmland with extensive fields, as well as forests and lakes. The town with 2300 inhabitants is dominated by agricultural industry, the harbour which is the most easterly of the Paris harbour connection, and the leisure facilities on the Seine.

The annual trade fair, together with other communual activities, contributes to the attraction of the whole canton Bray.

The historic town centre is partially surrounded by a well preserved town wall with an elmtree-
lined ring road running alongside. The medieval past of Bray can be seen everywhere when taking a walk along the old streets. There are many traces, amongst which are statues of St. Nicholas and
St. Antoine, as well as skylight windows originating from the Tuileries in Paris.

Notre Dame Church of our Lady is characterized by a variety of architectural styles from many epochs. The church has a notable roof in the shape of a boat and is part of the cultural gems which one should not miss.

Medieval houses line the roads of the town centre. One of these buildings is connected to the French national heroine Jeanne d’Arc.

The town is an attraction for tourists with its beautiful Town Hall, the well renovated partially covered market place, a college and a large camping site with tennis, sports centres and a swimming pool. The Seine with its facilities and locks, with its natural banks and the many surrounding small villages all emphasize the agricultural character of the town and the canton of Bray-sur-Seine.

The Hemsbach partners are always welcomed each time in a different community, thus being able over the years to become acquainted with the whole canton.

Neighbouring towns upstream on the Seine are Nogent-sur-Seine with its St. Lawrence Church dating from 15th to 17th century, the Camille-Claudel Museum and the nuclear power station Nogent.
Montereau is located downstream and is associated with the beautiful forests and castles of Fontainbleau. Castle Vauxle-Vicomte is located further north and is said to be the model for the construction of Versailles.

The historic town of Provins is situated approx. 20 km north of Bray-sur-Seine and is a world cultural heritage site with its town wall and Burgundy old town centre. Further south lies Sens with its Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace.

Thus our twin town not only fosters the contacts with our partners but is also a tourist destination which is well worth visiting as it lies on the edge of the Ile-de-France and in the centre of the corn granary of France.
